2019 GEO Report

Our classes will be doing two projects:

Project 1 - baking cookies to give to PSD bus drivers, maintenance, and housekeeping staff.

Project 2 - collecting medical supplies and making care kits to send to SoleHope (http://solehope.org/)

During the year, we noticed a number of kids come to Grays Ferry skatepark everyday to watch skaters and, of course, for the chance to use their boards. Many of the neighborhood children don't have the means to obtain new boards, safety equipment, or basic instruction. While a few skaters have gotten together to donate old decks, large numbers of full setup donations are difficult to provide between a handful of people.

Visitors can create “I Have a Dream…” mobiles and express their dreams for their communities, the country, and the world.

Food collection for Philabundance. 1st grade collection from the PSD community, plus family and friends. We collect non-perishable foods and deliver to Philabundance. Included is studies of people who are less fortunate than we are. (Mary GIllogly and Nicolette Colon)

The NO STADIUM NO DEAL COALITION is supporting the Concerned Citizens of Point Breeze, Anti-Gentrification & Displacement Forum. Discussion topics will reveal disproportionate city planning threatens to affordable housing availability in communities historically occupied by people of color: Removal of African American Communities, Redlining - PBS National Report, Rental/Tenant Issues, Housing Conformity (4-5 story mansions), Sheriff Sales – Delinquent Property Taxes, 10 year Tax Abatement.

The gun safety table will work to bring awareness and change to the issue of gun safety. Volunteers will have the opportunity to write letters to address these issues with politicians both at the local and federal level. At the service day event, participants will have the opportunity to make a poster for a peaceful demonstration promoting gun safety. The peaceful and positive witness will take place in Yardley, PA after our main Service event.

Clothing Sale Clean-up on Monday

Students, family members, and staff will be creating craft bags for children in St. Christopher's Hospital.

Different clubs, sports teams and musical groups will be doing service projects (visiting nursing home, blankets for St. Mary's, reading to younger children) afterschool the week after MLK day.

Family Ambassadors conduct readings of MLK bio books to children organized by age groups.
Adults are welcome to participate. After the readings, all participants complete an MLK Day discussion sheet "I have a dream that one day..." and share each other's dreams in the group. Volunteers also will be assembling family resource bags -- filled with home goods and cleaning supplies -- to be distributed to participants and at other AFEL events. Partners include People's Emergency Center.

A day for activities, food and fun with boys and their fathers.

Our student government and junior honor society will run Alex's lemonade stand, and all of the proceeds will be donated to the organization @ https://www.alexslemonade.org/about/meet-alex.
We will also host a clothing drive to benefit the St. Patrick's Association.

The children of Gaudenzia Centro will do a program to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.
Refreshments will be served.

Students and their families from the Lower Merion School District will participate in a variety of projects, from creating Valentines to Veterans, to Dream Flags, to snack bags for families at the Ronald McDonald House, and more projects TBD. There will be entertainment as well.

We plan to hold an all day event for families to attend. When they stop in for the program they will receive a "peace" pin to wear. They will receive a shoe box to decorate. They will take the shoe box home and fill it with hygiene supplies and comfort items for elementary age kids. We will also have other crafts and refreshments for the families. We will ask them to return the boxes on February 14th so we can "spread the love".

We will be making fleece tie blankets and packaging toiletries and winter clothing items for another organization that hand delivers items to people who are homeless and living on the streets of Center City.

Penn State Brandywine student organizations will be running various family-friendly service activities. We will be honoring Dr. King's legacy through projects that focus on kindness, inclusion and advocacy. Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage in service opportunities such as crocheting caps for newborns, writing cards to our military members overseas, creating Valentines for local seniors in the community, and organizing toiletry kits for women's shelters.

Girl Scouts of Troop 9362 will assist the elderly residents of the Gray Manor Apartments in creating greeting cards and 50 Jared boxes for Shriners Hospital as well as greeting cards for military service people. The scouts will deliver the Jared Boxes and mail the greetings cards to servicemembers.

6-12 grade Girl Scouts will be creating backpacks to be delivered through Lehigh Valley hospital’s street doctors program. The bags will be given to the homeless.

Temple University's Office of Community Relations will partner with the Beckett Life Center to create a workshop that will engage children and youth on the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. The agencies will work with the students to create vision boards.

This project allows children and youth volunteers to use their talents and skills to give back and help others. The children will make arts and crafts gifts for senior citizens and cards for soldiers and veterans using scrap-booking techniques.

This project allows children and youth volunteers to be active through videos, games and movement that teach and share the legacy on Dr. King. Activities foster the atmosphere of celebration and holiday.
