The West Philadelphia Alliance for Children is now seeking volunteers to help with shelving, cateloging and organizing books to prepare for the opening of our newst school library...Harrington Elementary school! Volunteering in a WePAC library means being part of a team of caring people, passionate about sharing the love of reading with the children of Philadelphia.

South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race presents the 18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Monday, January 21, 2019 at 2:00 pm, at Columbia High School, 17 Parker Ave, Maplewood. The event is free and open to all. Hundreds of SOMA residents and friends from neighboring communities gathering donations.

Montclair State University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local community members are invited to serve in the Montclair community and surrounding areas. Volunteers arrive at the Student Center Cafeteria and are dismissed to their service sites which are 13 off-campus sites and 3 on-campus sites. The off-campus service sites are Canterbury Village, Ceberal Palsy of North Jersey, CUMAC, Covenant House of Newark, Habitat for Humanity Paterson, Job Haines, KinderSmile Foundation, and more!

Montclair State University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local community members are invited to serve in the Montclair community and surrounding areas. Specifically, volunteers Covenant House of Newark to help assist in outreach activities.

Specifically, students will being be partnering with KinderSmile Foundation in order to assist in outreach of health service

The first half of this service project will introduce volunteers to some key historical sites in West Philadelphia, providing an education on their significance. Volunteers will also learn about the trees located at these sites by name, historical significance and characteristics. We will walk to clean up a nearby historical site and learn about the historical markers throughout West Philadelphia.

The day with start with a unity walk. Participants will then visit four local houses of worship and participant in a community service project at each location.

The Student Government Association invites individuals of the Raritan Valley community to share their favorite short work based on the theme “MLK: Live the Legacy”. The Read-In will focused upon multicultural works. The Read-In is a very unique event as it connects cultural and literary diversity between writers. In addition, emerging student writers are granted the opportunity to share their work amongst one another. Students, faculty and staff will participate in the Read-In.

Students will engage in increasing knowledge and skills to be active social justice advocates in their local communities. Various workshops will provide participates with Cognitive: Critical thinking, Openness to diversity and challenge, Knowledge about different racial/ethnic groups; Socio-Cognitive: Cultural awareness, Intellectual and social self-confidence, Leadership;
Citizenship: Interest in equity and social justice; Values/Attitudes: Civic values, Commonality of values with others.

We will prepare the meal and dining room to welcome our guests. We will serve dinner to our guests. Then we will clean the dining room and kitchen after the meal. We will have volunteers help with the meal service. Project Hope will send a NP to do screenings for our guests (blood pressure, HIV, glucose, etc.)

This year, City Year Philly will be at Kensington High School on a mission to help create a more bright and welcoming space for more than 600 students. Accompany City Year AmeriCorps members and staff, community leaders, neighbors, and friends on a full day of community service painting 100 murals to help beautify the school’s interior. This event is for all ages. Snack, water, and a light lunch will be provided to all. Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and clothing to paint in.

This is an invasive plants removal and litter clean up. Most of the ivy we'll be addressing is English ivy, but there is some poison ivy too. We will have protective gloves and Tecnu scrub for clean up. But volunteers can opt to pick up trash too and stay away from the plants. No problem. See more details above.

Our day will include mural and t-shirt painting, an essay and art contest, a mobile black history museum, a book fair, book giveaway and author signings, two historical interpretation presentations of Bessie Coleman & Harriet Tubman by Dr. Daisy Century, wkshps on conflict resolution, grief recovery, community concerns as well as a quilting project and more.

Animal Supplies Collection for Burlington County Animal Shelter:
Caring for our animals requires a lot of time, love, money, and supplies. Below is our “Wish List.” Donating the following items help us with the day-to-day care of our animals and support our operational needs. Thank You!

Highland students ages 14-18 will gather food resources to make approximately 250-300 perishable meals to be distributed to the greater Camden County area food-bank.

We would like to invite our surrounding community (Society Hill) to watch the documentary about the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Worker Strike entitled, "At The River I Stand." From there we would like to have a representative from AFSME talk to the group about the role of unions. We would also like to ask attendees to bring donations of school supplies for Nebinger Elementary School which is in our community. The students will assist the residents at Lions Gate in several different ways including bingo and arts and crafts. The children might also help the residents get to and from the activity rooms, which may include helping them in their wheelchairs. If time permits, we will also have a question and answer period with the residents to find out what the world was like when the residents grew up. At the end of our time there, the students will read Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream" speech.
