Each year, in honor of MLK Day, the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg sponsors an International Poetry & Storytelling Festival to highlight accomplished writers and encourage young talent. The Council will announce the winners of the student writing competition as well as feature acclaimed poets and storytellers from our region and around the world

The activities will include workshops, resources, 1 on 1 consults, networking, and vendors. Anticipated speakers include Kenneth English with Jeanette Tennant and the Get It, Live It, Be It panel. All ages welcome. Continental breakfast and lunch served. Hosted by Philadelphia Housing Authority, Lucien E. Blackwell Community Center, Roses Clubhouse, People's Emergency Center, Mill Creek Advisory Council and Mill Creek Community Partnership.

Celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of service with your friends and neighbors at his memorial at the intersection of 40th, Lancaster, and Haverford Avenues. Enjoy refreshments, live music, and spoken word performances.

Celebrate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with your West Philadelphia friends and neighbors at the new Lucien E. Blackwell Community Center! Activities will include arts, crafts, games, and reading One Book, One Philadelphia youth companion titles Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes and Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña. READING WILL BE AT 11AM.

Our day will include mural and t-shirt painting, an essay and art contest, a mobile black history museum, a book fair, book giveaway and author signings, two historical interpretation presentations of Bessie Coleman & Harriet Tubman by Dr. Daisy Century, wkshps on conflict resolution, grief recovery, community concerns as well as a quilting project and more.

Special worship service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry readings, interpretive lyrical dance by Crystal Monsanto, and sermon/talk (Do, Walk, Love) by guest speaker, Craig Uplinger, referencing the MLK, Jr. sermon Rediscovering Lost Values.

That day, GraceKids will be doing a MLK themed lesson as well with children ages 4-5th Grade.

Backpacks will be prepared for homeless adults in our City, to include sheltered and non-sheltered persons. The contents will include washcloth, socks (at least 2 pairs), bottle of water and personal care products including hand sanitizer and bar soap container. The personal care items will be placed in plastic gallon zip bags to provide a container for later use. A resource guide will also be included. The back packs will be gender specific. Volunteers include (a.) donors (b.) assemblers (c.) d

Volunteers from Temple University will be cleaning the inside of the convent and church.

Help Calvary Center get spruced up for 2019! As a busy community center in a historical building, all of our spaces are in constant use and could use some love. Projects will happen in a morning and an afternoon shift, and you'll be able to choose your project when you arrive. In the morning, our friends from Kol Tzedek Synagogue will lead a children's project, open to all ages. Lunch is provided!
