2019 GEO Report

Montclair State University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local community members are invited to serve in the Montclair community and surrounding areas. Volunteers arrive at the Student Center Cafeteria and are dismissed to their service sites which are 13 off-campus sites and 3 on-campus sites. Specifically, students will be assisting a local nursing home, Canterbury Village in therapeutic recreation activities.

This project focuses on literacy. Volunteers visit community day care centers, schools and shelters to read books, do arts and crafts activities and reflect on Dr. King with children and residents. Birthday cake and refreshments may be served. Each child and mother receive a brand new book.

Volunteers will be engaged in a range of urban gardening activities includeing: -spreading mulch -moving soil -moving logs -turning soil -neighborhood clean up

On Monday January 21, 2019, the Crispus Attucks Association will be holding its annual MLK Day of Service. At 8 AM we will begin with musical presentations from local organizations and schools , as well as community members.Shortly after the "Living the Dream Award" ceremony will take place for selected high school students that represent what MLK stood for. Lastly, the annual breakfast is served while attendees can sign up for volunteer sites throughout the city.

Ongoing monthly project, collecting old batteries and other hazardous waste to be dropped off at a recycling plant

The Maintain/Clean & Sanitize Facilities project allows volunteers to help others by maintaining the facilities and centers that take care of children, the homeless, disabled and the hungry.

Maintenance of trails that lead from our Hermitages. Removing fallen branches, remarking the trails.

Will work for an agency that serves homeless or senior citizens the students will assemble packages or help with thrift store. tbd

Painting

We have a greenhouse space that activities could occur in for inclement weather, but if the weather is at all good, we would likely be cleaning up outside in the garden spaces and surrounding area and building garden beds for next year.

Calling all blood donors – your donation is needed today to help patients in need.

This project allows children and youth volunteers to use their talents and skills to create posters depicting Dr. King's legacy. Posters are displayed via onsite gallery and posted on website.

volunteers will assist our Therapeutic Recreation staff facility programs for our residents and visit residents 1:1. A social opportunity.

painting and Deep Cleaning

This project focuses on literacy. Children and youth are allowed to explore, discover and understand the life, teaching and philosophy of Dr. King.

We are cleaning up, painting and renovating a space to be used for various community eduction projects and workshops.

This project focuses on providing food for local community institutions that feed the hungry, homeless and less fortunate. The “SuperMarket Food Drive” is conducted to stock the West Chester Food Cupboard.

Cleaning of pews, windows, rugs, etc

Group of students to volunteer at the area SPCA with feeding and grooming animals, cleaning cages, etc.

The MLK Fine Arts Presentation allows volunteers to accompany the choir, dancers and other performers to Exton Mall in a community outreach effort. Volunteers will greet guests and share information about Dr. King. The performance presents the music favored by Dr. King and was a part of the civil rights movement.

Help with garage clean up and assemble shelving for donations.

Volunteers will be engaging in a thorough clean up of the West Market Corridor. Starting from 63rd and Market, volunteers will pick up trash, debris, and litter using a rolling trash can. At the end, volunteers will drop off the bags of collected trash at 62nd and Market for pickup.
Volunteers will break at 12 PM for a lunch provided for by Whole Foods Market and West Phillie Produce.

This project addresses the current economic issues facing the community today through empowerment seminars and workshops. Seminars to assist the the unemployed and job seekers with job hunting skills and self esteem will be offered. Financial information and wellness tips may be shared with clients so they have a well-rounded basis.

In the process of confirming our charities that we will be collecting for this year. Usually services include: cooking meals, clothes, books & food collections (involving sorting and packing) letter writing for vets, knitting and crafts for senior homes. A comprehensive list will be available by the end of November.

PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization Achieving Community Together) will be performing a neighborhood clean-up around the PRCC, Philadelphia Recovery Community Center. Base location address is 1701 W. Lehigh Avenue, #6, Philadelphia, PA 19132. We invite the community and ALL to help lend a hand in this clean up!
