The mission of the Cecil B. Moore Philadelphia Freedom Fighters is to keep the legacy of Humanitarian, Montford Point Marine Sergeant Major, Defense Attorney, Civil Rights Activist, NAACP President, and City Councilman, Cecil B. Moore, in the forefront of the history of the City of Philadelphia and of these United States of America. This symbol of hope, bravery, intelligence, resilience, resistance, faith and belief in a just and safe country, stands as a beacon of light in the face of racism, prejudice, injustice and inequality. He galvanized and lead the citizenry , as President of the Philadelphia branch of the NAACP, in "direct action", to wage successful battles against sanctioned oppression. A man of the people, the organization was transformed from elitist to inclusive. He increased the number of Blacks in voter registration, employment, remedied hiring discrimination with the building and trades industries, institutions of education, airlines, Post Office, bus lines, and eradicated " blackface" in parades. While the case was fought in court, his longest demonstration, 7 months 17 days, began May 1, 1965, outside Girard College, which excluded Blacks from admission, this helped achieve the desired result, desegregation in 1968.
We remain active in the fight for justice and equality as it encompasses every aspect in the lives of American citizens. Freedom Fighters encourage students of all ages to participate in civic engagement, to believe in themselves, their worth, the importance of education and alternatives in conflict resolution.
