Volunteer for this ProjectCecil B. Moore Philadelphia Freedom FightersKaren Asper Jordan

The Cecil B. Moore Philadelphia Freedom Fighters are veterans of the Civil Rights Movement in Philadelphia. Inspired, as teenagers, to fight segregation and discrimination, under the dynamic leadership of Cecil Bassett Moore Esq., president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, NAACP, criminal attorney, civil rights activist, humanitarian, City Councilman of the 5th District, and a proud U.S. Marine. Cecil B. Moore championed Philadelphia's most needy African Americans. He transformed the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP, from an elite organization to an inclusive one, to achieve results through public activism. Relentless was his fight against police brutality, discrimination in the building trades industry, the railroad, Post Office and in education. Moore increased the number of African Americans employed in small businesses, remedied discrimination hiring at many large companies, eradicated "blackface" in parades and registered thousands of voters. His longest lived demonstration, while the case was battled in court, was Girard College, which was desegregated in 1968. A court battle, in 1954, was spear headed, by the late, Honorable Judge Raymond Pace Alexander. The Cecil B. Moore Philadelphia Freedom Fighters' mission is to keep the legacy of Cecil B. Moore alive. We engage the youth in schools, churches and colleges. We work actively with the Cecil B. Moore Library, Girard College, Blockson Collection at Temple University, Martin Luther King Day of Service, Urban Archives of Temple University, Beech Incorporated, History Making Productions and community initiatives. The Freedom Fighters encourage education, activism, pride, dignity, understanding, inclusion, respect, commitment, service, responsibility to self and humanity, and to exercise your rights as an American citizen.
