This event is open to the public on Monday, January 15th and Wednesday January 17th, 2019. Volunteers will be assigned on a rotating basis to collect shoe donations and share information about the HVC Shoe Drive Campaign. This is community service for the MLK Jr. Day of Service prior to January 21st, 2019.

We will be cleaning the inside of the recreation center.

A veteran will come and speak with volunteers regarding the veterans we will be servicing. Staff and students will collect items/donations and create care packages to service homeless veterans.

We will be spending the afternoon visiting with residents of Maplewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. We play games, tell stories, and spend time with the residents. Kids and babies of all ages are welcome. There is a piano and plenty of space for other instruments if you would like to come share any musical talents. It's a wonderful day to share with the residents of the Germantown center!

Highland students ages 14-18 will gather food resources to make approximately 250-300 perishable meals to be distributed to the greater Camden County area food-bank.

There will be a coordinator at each site, as well as trash bags and tools for mulching or raking if weather permits.
At the end of the morning, around 12 Noon, volunteers will gather to read excerpts from speeches or quotes by Dr. King and share any memories or examples of his work that is meaningful to them.

A combination of community residents and community leaders will come together to clean the facility and surrounding streets on this day.

Join Independence Seaport Museum, Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, and United by Blue for a day full of service and fun as volunteers and staffers will clean up portions of Christopher Columbus Blvd. Directly adjacent to the Delaware River, this is a key area to keep the Delaware River clean.

In partnership with NewCORE (New Conversations on Race and Ethncity) and WHYY, a group of promient religious leaders will share their stories and enagage in a conversation on how race and racism informs their leadership and the communities they lead. Included in the evening will be light reception, where attendees will be invited to engage on their own small group discussions and story-telling activities .

The Fountain Street Steps (at Umbria Street). We will cut down all perennials and tall grasses and remove other debris and weeds in preparation of next spring and summer season. Also maybe start preparing some planting beds for a spring planting of native perennials.

Our MLK project will consist of Indoor Cleaning, Organizing recreation equipment/Materials and Light Painting. Breakfast Refreshments and Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

5 adults, 35 children will be cooking soup and packaging it!

Families will gather to create personalized calendars and bookmarks to hand to residents of Wesley Enhanced Living.

At the animal shelter, volunteers will help with cleaning, laundry, dishes, outdoor garbage pickup, and creating enrichment items for our animals within the facility.”

Volunteers will be packing items to prepare for their delivery to families the following week. We will help pack different types of packages including: toiletries, food, and other items for families in their warehouse.

Volunteers will be sorting donations into categories (Women’s T-shirts, Women’s Pants, dresses, Men’s jackets, etc…) After sorting, the items are stored in the warehouse so they can be accessed to be taken to Our Closet pop-up shops throughout the city of Philadelphia.

The Food Bank of Delaware’s Backpack Program volunteers will be packing food in bags for the student. the goal is to pack 1200 means.

Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated, engaged advocates for the world’s hungry. WCU will engage volunteers to honor Dr. King by making “no-sew” fleece blankets that will benefit children in our region. Through
partnerships with three non-profit organizations (Fleece for Keeps, Chester County Hospital, and Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital for
Children), children will receive a warm, comforting blanket. volunteers will watch a video about Dr. King’s legacy and
representatives from each non-profit agency will highlight the impact these blankets will have in our community.

This event will honor the life & legacy of Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Through character Interpretation and performing arts. A musical
tribute to honor his life, and legacy. Partnering organizations include Inspiration & Co. , The Philadelphia Street Performers
Collaboration, Fire Blazing Records, The Strawberry Mansion Faith-Based Coalition, and a host of other Churches, and friends of
Keep The Dream Alive Community Development Corp. There will be volunteer opportunities at this event.

The Kennett Area YMCA is proudly partnering with a few local community based organizations for MLK Day. We will have 2 opportunities for the public to get involved. Our first opportunity will be with the Kennett Area Senior Center. Our volunteers will come prepared to roll up their sleeves and dig in to help paint, clean, and reorganize a few work spaces at the center. The second opportunity will be with His Mission Shelter and the Kennett Y will be assembling personal care bags for the shelter.

We are partnering with Northeast NORC to assist older adults in Philadelphia with the clean up and maintenance of their homes. We are inviting current students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the college to join us for this event.

Everyone asked to bring spare change to "Change for Change" at Franklin Mint Credit Union, Kennett Square on 1/19/19. All funds donated to the Kennett Food Cupboard and the West Grove Bridge Food Pantry.

We will be having a panel discussion hearing from formerly incarcerated individuals and a prison care kit assembly, where we will be assembling donated hygiene items to be distributed in prison.

The Mill Creek clean up day will involve raking leaves and cleaning debris from the outdoor amenities of the playground, including the playgrounds, basketball courts, ball fields and surrounding pavements. Indoor cleaning of the recreation center will also take place. Members of the Mill Creek Advisory Council will be on hand to provide assistance with the clean up effort.

The Martin Luther King CommUNITY of the Greater Kennett Area will present the 18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. CommUNITY Breakfast on Monday, January 21, 2019. The breakfast is an opportunity to celebrate Dr. King's legacy of love and service and be inspired to live out his dream today in our community and throughout the world. Our 2019 theme is "Diversity is our Strength."

Join the Norristown Project for our annual MLK Day of Service activity at Montgomery County OIC. Each year we select a classroom at our facility to be painted. On January 21st, we will paint our community classroom and after-school classroom. Details to be announced as we get closer to January.

Outdoor clean up the surrounding neighborhood and immediate community.

We would like to invite our surrounding community (Society Hill) to watch the documentary about the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Worker Strike entitled, "At The River I Stand." From there we would like to have a representative from AFSME talk to the group about the role of unions. We would also like to ask attendees to bring donations of school supplies for Nebinger Elementary School which is in our community. New Castle County, Department of Community Services will be collecting new children’s books for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. New books will be donated to parents and caregivers of budding readers, children ages 0 to 5 years. The 1000 Books before kindergarten initiative was started by the 1000 Books Foundation.

Books will be sorted and organized at the Gilliam Building and then transported to local New Castle County libraries for parents and caregivers to pick up.

New Salem Baptist Church is a community church looking for volunteers to assist with cleaning and painting various areas in the church (bathrooms, sanctuary, kitchen, dinning hall) This church serves the community and would really appreciate help to keep it presentable for its members and community.

Volunteers will join N5SRP and their Olney Youth Advisory COuncil in the efforts of their anti-litter campaign, Keep 5th Clean. Volunteers will clean along North 5th Street at short dumping sites, help remove illegal bandit signs, and educate merchants.

Volunteers from partner organizations and the community will asist older adults residing in Northeast Philadelphia neighborhoods with weatherization and minor home maintenance. Tasks may include: changing hard to reach light bulbs and smoke detectors, washing and weatherizing windows, covering window air conditioners. Basement and garage cleanouts, Minor home repairs.

Northern Liberties Recreation Center will be making food for the homeless.

Monday’s project will include preparing a classroom for transformation into a new calming room for Conwell. The project will also include refreshing the cafeteria and other common areas, and assembling recreation equipment for Conwell’s after-school program. The majority of the work will be cleaning and painting, with some organization and equipment assembly as well.

MLK Day of Action rally to discuss the importance of raising the minimum wage in Pennsylvania and demand $15 per hour minimum pay for our neighbors/their employees.
