PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization Achieving Community Together) will be performing a neighborhood clean-up around the PRCC, Philadelphia Recovery Community Center. Base location address is 1701 W. Lehigh Avenue, #6, Philadelphia, PA 19132. We invite the community and ALL to help lend a hand in this clean up!

Backpacks will be prepared for homeless adults in our City, to include sheltered and non-sheltered persons. The contents will include washcloth, socks (at least 2 pairs), bottle of water and personal care products including hand sanitizer and bar soap container. The personal care items will be placed in plastic gallon zip bags to provide a container for later use. A resource guide will also be included. The back packs will be gender specific. Volunteers will help process donated library books and get them ready to be checked out. This includes typing spine labels, applying contact paper, taping the spines, cataloging books, and shelving books. The tasks will be set up in stations like an assembly line and books will move from station to station until they are on the shelves and ready for students to check out! Volunteers can choose the tasks that suit their interests and skills.

A diverse ensemble of local actors will join students from local colleges to perform a passionate reading of Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.

We are a Christian group helping in the neighborhood recruiting youth of all ages to support nonviolence. A year march from our church grounds to West mill creek then over to 40th Lancaster Ave. Were we have speaker leaders and veterans speak to the group about Martin Luther King Jr. also walking to 40th walnut to the Rotunda where we serve lunch and allow the youth to perform their talents.

Participants will clean up the neighborhood they pass along the walk.

This project will be at Germantown Friends School. The aim is to have a few volunteers helping people register for the other projects that will be happening at Germantown Friends School during MLK Day.

This project will involve Germantown Friends School members and their families making signs against gun violence.

Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated, engaged advocates for the world’s hungry. The senior residents of the 1600 block Rowan Walkway, will be clean our block and we could use help in doing so. Most of the neighbors are females and over 70 years old; and it difficult to maintain our gardens, and sometimes sweep our sidewalks in the cold weather. I hope you can help us with our clean-up efforts. I wish there were agencies to help seniors with things like sweeping sidewalks, and removing snow. If there is, sign us up!

K-5th grade Girl Scouts will be creating gifts for meals on wheels recipients.

6-12 grade Girl Scouts will be creating backpacks to be delivered through Lehigh Valley hospital’s street doctors program. The bags will be given to the homeless.

Sayre Morris staff and volunteers will work on a beautification project which comprises cleaning common areas as well as outside. Predominantly, the main entrance and side garden needs some tender loving care. We would like to create a raised garden to promote healthy eating as well as function as a distribution site in the near future. The goal is to brighten the entrance to make it more appealing to the community via painting the walls and planting flowers, fruit, and vegetables.

Germantown Friends School students, faculty and families will sew hats, scarves and turtle furs for Soup Kitchens in Germantown and the Center for Returning Citizens.

Students will engage in increasing knowledge and skills to be active social justice advocates in their local communities. Various workshops will provide participates with Cognitive: Critical thinking, Openness to diversity and challenge, Knowledge about different racial/ethnic groups; Socio-Cognitive: Cultural awareness, Intellectual and social self-confidence, Leadership;
Citizenship: Interest in equity and social justice; Values/Attitudes: Civic values, Commonality of values with others.

This project allows children and youth volunteers to use their talents and skills to create posters depicting Dr. King's legacy. Posters are displayed via onsite gallery and posted on website.

Each house of worship does a a thirty-minute service with a message about their faith, traditions and beliefs, followed by fellowship meal or refreshments. This is the first time this House of worship is participating in Unity Week.

Did you know that socks are the #1 most requested clothing item in the homeless community? A fresh pair of socks and a snack ‘rolled together’ are our small way of making a big difference in the lives of those in need. We will be packaging snacks and/or hygiene items such as toothpaste or a toothbrush. They will be finished off with a ribbon and a note of encouragement from a child to bring compassion and a bit of hope to individuals experiencing homelessness.

For the community we will be serving Spaghetti Luncheons to surrounding area individuals. This will include salad, roll and spaghetti.

During the year, we noticed a number of kids come to Grays Ferry skatepark everyday to watch skaters and, of course, for the chance to use their boards. Many of the neighborhood children don't have the means to obtain new boards, safety equipment, or basic instruction. While a few skaters have gotten together to donate old decks, large numbers of full setup donations are difficult to provide between a handful of people.

South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race presents the 18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Monday, January 21, 2019 at 2:00 pm, at Columbia High School, 17 Parker Ave, Maplewood. The event is free and open to all. Hundreds of SOMA residents and friends from neighboring communities gathering donations.

South Philadelphia High School, Mayor's Office of Education, Bethanna, Lower Moyanmensing Civic Association, CityLife Church, and SEAMAAC will host a day of service focused on literacy. Volunteers will paint hallways in the school and construct Little Free Libraries.

The first half of this service project will introduce volunteers to some key historical sites in West Philadelphia, providing an education on their significance. Volunteers will also learn about the trees located at these sites by name, historical significance and characteristics. We will walk to clean up a nearby historical site and learn about the historical markers throughout West Philadelphia.
