2019 Community Project Dashboard

The gun safety table will work to bring awareness and change to the issue of gun safety. Volunteers will have the opportunity to write letters to address these issues with politicians both at the local and federal level. At the service day event, participants will have the opportunity to make a poster for a peaceful demonstration promoting gun safety. The peaceful and positive witness will take place in Yardley, PA after our main Service event.

Project is a cleaning, small project and organization event.

Assist with cleaning and painting

Our day of service will consist of making blankets for children's hospitals and homeless shelters, making get well cards with words of encouragement for children and adults, and making care package zip-lock bags for the homeless (wipes, lotions.hand sanitizer, toothpaste, toothbrush, socks). We are partnering with Ronald McDonald House, Children's Hospital, Joseph's Project, and Cooper Hospital.

Donations of non-perishables to a local food pantry and cooking about 200 meals for those in need in community.

Volunteers will make crafts to give to senior citizens.

In the process of confirming our charities that we will be collecting for this year. Usually services include: cooking meals, clothes, books & food collections (involving sorting and packing) letter writing for vets, knitting and crafts for senior homes. A comprehensive list will be available by the end of November.

We will be cleaning the inside of the recreation center.

A veteran will come and speak with volunteers regarding the veterans we will be servicing. Staff and students will collect items/donations and create care packages to service homeless veterans.

Volunteers will do general cleaning and remove old books. Ages 14+

Students and families will work to sort and create care packages to donate to a charitable organization.

There will be a coordinator at each site, as well as trash bags and tools for mulching or raking if weather permits.
At the end of the morning, around 12 Noon, volunteers will gather to read excerpts from speeches or quotes by Dr. King and share any memories or examples of his work that is meaningful to them.

Keep in mind this is an all outdoor event.

This event is open to the public on Monday, January 15th and Wednesday January 17th, 2019. Recruiting individuals for training and job readiness for the HVC Environmental Education Ambassador program. This is community service for the MLK Jr. Day of Service prior to January 21st, 2019.

A combination of community residents and community leaders will come together to clean the facility and surrounding streets on this day.

This project will involve Germantown Friends School members and their families discussing how to improve racial awareness. Ideally this dialogue will be student-led.

We will be cleaning up spaces in the school, including closet spaces and offices. Also organizing donations given such as coats and books. Mainly though there will be painting.

Volunteers from Temple University will be cleaning the inside of the convent and church.

I'm in the planning stage of this project. I will be contacting several businesses(Post Office, Shoprite, Planet fitness, SEPTA...)
in the area for volunteers. I did attend a training class of 11/16/2018 at the library on South Broad Street.
At the event we will be cleaning trash that is dumped under Island Ave heading from Penrose Plaza to Suffolk Ave.
This area is an eyesore to the neighborhood. I'm new to Philadelphia and don't want this area to be the first thing our guest see.

With the Philly Farm Crew, groups of volunteers will visit local urban farms (most likely in West Philly) to lend a much-needed hand with one of various farming/gardening projects; people will get their hands dirty in doing several hours of manual work

We will be leading a litter clean-up at a site on the refuge that gets used heavily for fishing. This area accumulates litter from some visitors but mostly it is litter that flows down the Darby Creek from different parts of Philadelphia.

Volunteers will join N5SRP and their Olney Youth Advisory COuncil in the efforts of their anti-litter campaign, Keep 5th Clean. Volunteers will clean along North 5th Street at short dumping sites, help remove illegal bandit signs, and educate merchants.

The Knitting project focuses on using crafts and skills to provide items of warmth, comfort and clothing for others. Both experienced and novice volunteers are needed and welcomed. Volunteers will be using looms or needles to knit baby caps for newborns or learning to knit by "master" knitters.

Community event/ celebration of Martin Luther King Day, through song and preformance art

Community members and volunteers will write letters for local city councilpersons and other politicians seeking support to fully fund the Free Library of Philadelphia. In 2018, Northwest library branches were forced to close early 86 times this year due to employee shortages--that’s the second highest rate in the city. Volunteers, students, and families will put together toiletry bags that are being given to the homeless.

This event is Linconia's annual event that we (B3T) and the community have been invited to be a part of for approx. 14 years.
So their service includes clergy from The Bensalem-Feasterville Minusterium, and community participation.

The students will assist the residents at Lions Gate in several different ways including bingo and arts and crafts. The children might also help the residents get to and from the activity rooms, which may include helping them in their wheelchairs. If time permits, we will also have a question and answer period with the residents to find out what the world was like when the residents grew up. At the end of our time there, the students will read Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream" speech.

This project will happening around Germantown. The idea is that the leader of Philly One Love Guns Down, Keith Schenck, will lead MLK volunteers from Germantown Friends School in picking up litter in Germantown to make it a safer and more beautiful place.

Each house of worship does a a thirty-minute service with a message about their faith, traditions and beliefs, followed by fellowship meal or refreshments.

We will make and wrap 200 sandwiches for Holsey Temple's Feeding Ministry and Convenant House

Cleaning and clearing out a room for future use for seniors. Possibly painting.
Staff members will be present.
We may have a few volunteers that will help from a local church.

Cleaning up debris and leaves from the streets and lots from 35th and Fairmount Avenue to 37th and Fairmount Avenue. We will be bagging and removing the trash. After clean up serving a light lunch to volunteers as a thank you.

We will be spending the afternoon visiting with residents of Maplewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. We play games, tell stories, and spend time with the residents. Kids and babies of all ages are welcome. There is a piano and plenty of space for other instruments if you would like to come share any musical talents. It's a wonderful day to share with the residents of the Germantown center!

The plan is to clean the floors of the gymnasium, main hallways, the areas of the facility that are heavily used. Paint areas that have been neglected over a period of time.

The National Constitution Center will honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s lifelong dedication to justice, equality, and service for the greater good on Monday, January 21, with a discounted $5 admission. SLB Radio Productions presents a live 5-hour webcast exploring civil rights accomplishments, challenges, and dreams for the future. Hosted by area teens from throughout the region, Streaming Justice will originate from the SLB Radio studios in the Children's Museum and feature music, conversation, listener phone calls and more, all of which will air live at www.youthexpress.org or via the TuneIn app or the Simple Radio app

Help our teaching artists create a metal sculpture that pays tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous speech "I Have A Dream". Pick your favorite quote and punch it into metal sheeting, or add texture and shapes to the surface of the sculpture. When it's finished the sculpture will be featured in MAKESHOP until the end of February to celebrate Black History Month.

The Key Club will volunteer at the Masonic Home assisting with caring for the elderly residents. We will help deliver the mail, laundry, water & ice containers. Take the residents to the lunch room or to have their hair done. Sit and talk to them or read.

Together with AmeriHealth partners, we are working towards continued school facility improvements. With the assistance of many volunteers, we will tackle larger projects including:
painting doors, door-frames and hallway touch-ups
paint touch-ups for murals
closet clean-outs
materials distribution
classroom cleaning (desks, chairs, floors)

Serving breakfast and lunch for people coming to informational sessions.

The Mill Creek clean up day will involve raking leaves and cleaning debris from the outdoor amenities of the playground, including the playgrounds, basketball courts, ball fields and surrounding pavements. Indoor cleaning of the recreation center will also take place. Members of the Mill Creek Advisory Council will be on hand to provide assistance with the clean up effort.

Indoor painting, bathroom painting, closet storage reorganization, repair, painting. May include lifting up to 30 pounds.

Students from University of the Sciences along with parents of Mitchell Elementary will be assisitng in an indoor cleanup of school facilities, including parent center spaces.

We will partner with Universities in the area, our parents and students to keep our area clean and free of trash.

The Kennett Area YMCA is proudly partnering with a few local community based organizations for MLK Day. We will have 2 opportunities for the public to get involved. Our first opportunity will be with the Kennett Area Senior Center. Our volunteers will come prepared to roll up their sleeves and dig in to help paint, clean, and reorganize a few work spaces at the center. The second opportunity will be with His Mission Shelter and the Kennett Y will be assembling personal care bags for the shelter.

George Washington will undergo a “ beautification  intervention” through a community service project and supported by volunteers. Following a needs assessment from students, teachers and staff, George Washington High School will support projects in the school around creating a brighter, more inviting learning environment for our students while also supporting GWHS' goals as a community school through help setting up our school food pantry, clothing closet and community garden.

New Castle County, Department of Community Services will be collecting new children’s books for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. New books will be donated to parents and caregivers of budding readers, children ages 0 to 5 years. The 1000 Books before kindergarten initiative was started by the 1000 Books Foundation.
Books will be sorted and organized at the Gilliam Building and then transported to local New Castle County libraries for parents and caregivers to pick up.

We will be honoring Dr. King's legacy through projects that focus on kindness, inclusion and advocacy. Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage in service opportunities such as crocheting caps for newborns.

Family Ambassadors conduct readings of MLK bio books to children organized by age groups.
Adults are welcome to participate. After the readings, all participants complete an MLK Day discussion sheet "I have a dream that one day..." and share each other's dreams in the group. Volunteers also will be assembling family resource bags -- filled with home goods and cleaning supplies -- to be distributed to participants and at other AFEL events. Partners include People's Emergency Center.

The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated, engaged advocates for those facing hunger. On Monday January 21, 2019, the Crispus Attucks Association will be holding its annual MLK Day of Service. At 8 AM we will begin with musical presentations from local organizations and schools , as well as community members.Shortly after the "Living the Dream Award" ceremony will take place for selected high school students that represent what MLK stood for. Lastly, the annual breakfast is served while attendees can sign up for volunteer sites throughout the city.

Discussion of mindfulness of spaces on campus as it related to, social justice and inclusion and equity. The Greek letter organizations will be sponsoring a film 'The Hate U Give', with a sort disscusion afterwards.

Join the Norristown Project for our annual MLK Day of Service activity at Montgomery County OIC. Each year we select a classroom at our facility to be painted. On January 21st, we will paint our community classroom and after-school classroom. Details to be announced as we get closer to January.

This activity is limited to 40 volunteers, please RSVP to sashe@montcooic.org with the number of volunteers you will bring. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

EAT Café (3820 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19104) is hosting volunteers from 9am to 5pm next Monday, January 21, 2019 for MLK DAY. Volunteers will: make lunch for a local group of volunteers, indoor cleanup, touching-up paint and assist with minor repairs inside our cozy West Philadelphia cafe. Lunch will be provided to our volunteers.

We will be making fleece tie blankets and packaging toiletries and winter clothing items for another organization that hand delivers items to people who are homeless and living on the streets of Center City.

Our day will include mural and t-shirt painting, an essay and art contest, a mobile black history museum, a book fair, book giveaway and author signings, two historical interpretation presentations of Bessie Coleman & Harriet Tubman by Dr. Daisy Century, wkshps on conflict resolution, grief recovery, community concerns as well as a quilting project and more.

Pleasant Advisory Council and We Heard You are gathering resourceful information from local organizations, etc...and sharing a newsletter/ brochure of programs for children, seniors and families offered at Pleasant Playground that will benefit all neighbors, and distributing packets door-to-door.
