2019 Community Project Dashboard

Backpacks will be prepared for homeless adults in our City, to include sheltered and non-sheltered persons. The contents will include washcloth, socks (at least 2 pairs), bottle of water and personal care products including hand sanitizer and bar soap container. The personal care items will be placed in plastic gallon zip bags to provide a container for later use. A resource guide will also be included. The back packs will be gender specific. From 9-noon we invite volunteers to join us at our office in the Bok Building (5th floor) to Prep Art Projects for Preschool Art Projects for our Free Art Workshops for Underserved Youth. Volunteers can learn how to make ASI crafts and cut fabric and paper projects, use a sewing machine, use glue guns google eyes and pompoms to make puppets. Volunteers are also welcomed to prep or make Valentine's Day cards which we distribute to homeless veterans and senior citizens.

Join the Norristown Project for our annual MLK Day of Service activity at Montgomery County OIC. Each year we select a classroom at our facility to be painted. On January 21st, we will paint our community classroom and after-school classroom. Details to be announced as we get closer to January.

This activity is limited to 40 volunteers, please RSVP to sashe@montcooic.org with the number of volunteers you will bring. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us for our next community cleanup on Saturday, January 19th! This time, we’re going to be cleaning the blocks surrounding Willard and Conwell Schools. At 9am, we'll be meeting in the Municipal Parking Lot across the street from Conwell (1804-36 East Clearfield St).

Students will assist Books Without Borders with transporting boxes from our campus storage units into temporary containers brought to campus by a designated shipping company. This temporary container will be on campus for a maximum of 6 hours. From there, it will be sealed and then shipped TBD.

Come to join us to read to children and learn how to be an active reader to keep our children on track to read by 4th grade!

Students will collect toiletry items prior to the Day of Service for volunteers, students, and families to organize into toiletry bags to be donated.

Sleeping Mat Project

A veteran will come and speak with volunteers regarding the veterans we will be servicing. Staff and students will collect items/donations and create care packages to service homeless veterans.

We will be working with the Philadelphia Goat Project cleaning stalls, training the goats, and walking the goats through the neighborhood and arboretum. The goats visit schools and perform at various community events and we support their training so they can do these projects. (Prinnie)

Bring, prepare and serve brunch to residents of Bethesda Broad Street, a residence for formerly homeless men and women. Music + reading from Dr. King's book "Why We Can't Wait".

Each house of worship does a a thirty-minute service with a message about their faith, traditions and beliefs, followed by fellowship meal or refreshments. This is the first time this house of worship is participating in Unity Week. The # below are estimated.

This project will happening at Germantown Friends School (GFS). GFS members will be viewing the short documentary and having a discussion about it afterwards.

Germantown Friends School students, faculty and families will participate in a walk around Germantown to learn about the different shops and organizations there.

We will show a documentary about Martin Luther King and then have a discussion about it.

This project will involve Germantown Friends School members and their families discussing how to improve racial awareness. Ideally this dialogue will be student-led.

Germantown Friends School students, faculty and families will sing make wooden bowls for a local empty bowls dinner.

This project will be at Germantown Friends School. The aim is to have a few volunteers helping out with any supplies that need to be distributed to other MLK Day projects at Germantown Friends School.

Germantown Friends School students and families will read the book Stone Soup and then make soup for Whosoever Gospel Mission.

We will be cleaning up spaces in the school, including closet spaces and offices. Also organizing donations given such as coats and books. Mainly though there will be painting.

This project will be at Germantown Friends School. The aim is to have a few volunteers helping people register for the other projects that will be happening at Germantown Friends School during MLK Day.

Germantown Friends School students, faculty and families will sew hats, scarves and turtle furs for Soup Kitchens in Germantown and the Center for Returning Citizens.

This project will be at Germantown Friends School. The aim is to have Germantown Friends School members discuss gun violence in a civil way, including implications for the future and ways we can stand up and speak out for a more peaceful world.

This project will happening around Germantown. The idea is that the leader of Philly One Love Guns Down, Keith Schenck, will lead MLK volunteers from Germantown Friends School in picking up litter in Germantown to make it a safer and more beautiful place.

Germantown Friends School students, faculty and families will participate in a dialogue on privilege.

There will be a coordinator at each site, as well as trash bags and tools for mulching or raking if weather permits.
At the end of the morning, around 12 Noon, volunteers will gather to read excerpts from speeches or quotes by Dr. King and share any memories or examples of his work that is meaningful to them.
Light refreshments will be served
Keep in mind this is an all outdoor event.

The first half of this service project will introduce volunteers to some key historical sites in West Philadelphia, providing an education on their significance. Volunteers will also learn about the trees located at these sites by name, historical significance and characteristics. We will walk to clean up a nearby historical site and learn about the historical markers throughout West Philadelphia.

Arcadia University participates in the MLK Day of Service by hosting the One-Stop-Drop and Shred Event. People from the community are able to come in and donate all of the items that they have been looking to part with. We have an on-site shredder and various organizations accepting organizations accepting donations in bins and trucks. We expect a lot of donations and provide an environmentally friendly way to rid of paper waste.

In partnership with the Central PA Food Bank, we will be joining together for an exciting and rewarding hands-on volunteer experience. Together we will pack nutritious meal kits that will be given to families who struggle with hunger in our community through the Food Bank’s partner agencies and programs. Food is the key to better health, opportunities, happiness and peace of mind. Together we are giving so much more than a meal. We are giving a brighter tomorrow to our neighbors!

The National Constitution Center will honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s lifelong dedication to justice, equality, and service for the greater good on Monday, January 21, with a discounted $5 admission. Penn State Brandywine student organizations will be running various family-friendly service activities. We will be honoring Dr. King's legacy through projects that focus on kindness, inclusion and advocacy. Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage in service opportunities such as crocheting caps for newborns, writing cards to our military members overseas, creating Valentines for local seniors in the community, and organizing toiletry kits for women's shelters.

Houseman Advisory Council, in conjunction with tar Heels Elite Basketball Mentors Program and Purpose Basketball Clinic, will be doing a revitalization for the winter season cleaning, painting and beautifying the Houseman Recreation Center in order to prepare it for the winter season. We will be cleaning, painting, cleaning storage areas and all. We are looking for civic, school based, and or community groups to come volunteer with us.

We plan to hold an all day event for families to attend. When they stop in for the program they will receive a "peace" pin to wear. They will receive a shoe box to decorate. They will take the shoe box home and fill it with hygiene supplies and comfort items for elementary age kids. We will also have other crafts and refreshments for the families. We will ask them to return the boxes on February 14th so we can "spread the love".

Participants will learn the Do's and Don'ts of Citizen Advocacy in this civic dialogue facilitated by Senator Art Haywood. Community members will learn strategies they can use to influence the decisions of their legislators.
