Why?
Philadelphia aspires to be a world-class city, even as it addresses challenges of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment or underemployment. Philadelphia OIC has as its mission to tackle those challenges and ensure a meaningful quality of life for families and individuals in our great city. OIC achieves this as a workforce development agency by linking workers to critical skills training, and real job opportunity. We will do this with our digital job fair on Monday, Jan. 18 from 11am to 3pm.
How?
Almost all jobs now require that you apply online to be effectively considered. Moreover, even “middle skills jobs” in support, technical, mechanical and other areas require a level of digital fluency with software, or computer technologies such as smart phones or tablets. Given these needs, it is imperative that workers competing for gateway jobs have facility with computers and a comfort level applying for jobs online, and creating professional social media profiles for that purpose. The digital job fair will provide registered clients with opportunities to apply -- onsite via computers – for real jobs where employers are ready to make hiring decisions. Volunteers will be available to assist clients with creating online profiles, and completing online applications.
What Can I do to Help?
1) VOLUNTEER -- OIC needs volunteers to commit to at least two hours to serve. Volunteers should be comfortable with desktops or laptops and online platforms for creating professional social profiles (eg. LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, Indeed) and applying for jobs via online portals. Volunteers should arrive at least 30 minutes before their two-hour commitment and receive simple training for working with clients with limited digital literacy. Online registration for volunteers will begin Friday, Jan. 8.
2) HIRE -- OIC is also looking for companies to commit to post ready-to-fill positions on their online portals for that day, and volunteer company representatives who can guide clients through their respective online job application process.
3) SHARE -- Finally, OIC seeks churches, civic and community organizations, and the offices of elected officials to promote the #JobsNOW digital job fair with their constituents. Online registration will begin Friday, Jan. 8, 2016 and continue through Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016. Go to www.philaoic.org.
